Richard Lainhart (1953-2011)

It has been an honor and privilege to know, record and perform with Richard Lainhart, an amazing sound sculptor and human being.

Richard and I met in late 2009, I believe. His sound and composition esthetic immediately connected with me as a language I adored, understood and would be able to converse with him in. We soon thereafter began to collaborate, Richard with his Buchla/Haaken setup and myself with prepared lap steel guitar.

I was privileged to have been able to perform with him live on several occasions, twice be apart of his Orchestra of the Future that performed an improvised live score to his recent History of the Future film (an assemblage of Prelinger Film Archive material).

In addition, we recorded enough audio in his studio which I hope to edit, master and have released in 2012.

Thank you, Richard for your sonic legacy and big heart.

Spider’s Song

This is a tune I wrote one year ago after it was time to let my dear old dog, Spider go. Back to the place where all the spirits come from and where they all return.

I was siting around the next morning in the sunny room where she used to look out the window. It was just me and her big dog buddy, Bloom. It was so peaceful and quiet and a little sad. This tune came right out.

The guitar is tuned C G C E C D – a variation on a John Fahey tuning. I did these three versions all in a row.

Spider’s Song #2

Spider’s Song #3

The piece has developed a bit since then, but there is something about the earliest versions of a song that is good and often, but not always elusive in later versions.

I’ll probably do this piece on some of my upcoming US solo tour dates.

End of Year X-Country Tour

Heading out on a dual solo x-country dash with fellow traveler, Joey Molinaro from Dec 27-Jan 8. More Apathy Destruction!

I’ll be doing a Fahey/Ribot/Frith/Sonic Youth style solo guitar set on acoustic and electric guitar (with the occasional collaboration). Joey shall be performing his footstompin’ grindcore fiddle Discordance-Axis interpretations and songs.

Reverend Screaming Fingers Big Band in NYC

The Reverend Screaming Fingers Big Band and films of the Overdub Club will play in the NYC area Dec 8 and 9.

I’m very excited to bring this project to a close at it was a major goal of mine to perform this live in 2011. The October San Francisco show was a big success and I hope those of you in the NY area can make it to one of the shows here.

The Reverend Screaming Fingers Big Band will present “Music for Driving and Film,” a night of instrumental music set to multiple projections of the hand-processed 16mm film images of San Francisco’s Alfonso Alvarez – a man banned for life from screening Bruce Connor films by Bruce Connor himself – and Thad Povey.

The band will feature SF players John Hanes (Chrome, Herzog’s ‘Grizzly Man’ soundtrack) on drums, Wil Hendricks (Edith Frost, Lofty Pillars) on bass and Suki O’Kane (She Mob) on vibraphone paired up with NYC guitarists Lucio Menegon (aka The Rev.) and Rob Price (Dim Sum Clip Job).

Thu Dec 8 will be find us at Brooklyn Fireproof in Bushwick (off the Morgan L stop). This is the official NY area show and will feature a full Reverend Big Band playing the Music for Driving and Film material, real 16mm film projections, plus a set by the wonderful Rachel Mason’s Little Band of Sailors, Alias Pail and PAS Musique.

Fri Dec 9th will highlight the more experimental/quieter side of the MD&F material at the Exapno Space in Brooklyn. Sets by David Grollman and Steve Norton, Jason Anastasoff’s Obscure Directions and NYC sound artist Richard Lainhart will screen his ‘History of the Future’ short with a live score by the assembled ‘The Orchestra of the Future’!
