Last night, I worked an event that served double duty as a fundraiser and afterparty for a new movie, Punk’s Not Dead which is screening at the SF Int’l Film festival. The movie isn’t much to speak of – despite a few good interview/soundbites (Mike Ness), it is too long with a rather confusing middle section and not much new to add to the aging beast that is punk.
But I digress. The Party. The Germs would be playing. Cool – never saw the Germs. My friend Scott and I volunteered to help with load in and load out. Load in never really materialized and load out was about 5 minutes. Scott did cut up some feather boas to make little feather balls that were stuffed into a live hedgerow that deliniated the ‘VIP’ area from the rest of the room and I was asked to rid a few vinyl sofas of ‘fingerprints.’ How punk is that!
In the VIP area, there were fancy snacks, real glass bottled water from Norway and top shelf liquor for free. I ordered a fancy pants Tanqueray ’10′ martini, served up with a twist and sipped it gracefully, wearing my torn up faded leather trenchcoat, and green keds. Everyone else was dressed up fancy. Alot of people thought I was in the band. I met this sassy, really cute gal. We spoke italian and giggled some.
Oh, I almost forgot! The Germs. Pat Smear was great, the bassist as well, the drummer – funny. The stand in for Darby Crash (some actor who apparently is on the TV show ‘ER’) was a joke. He tried real hard tho.
Memorable evening, to be sure.
