Verdant, like Vermont

Prehistoric Horse paid a visit to Verdant Studio up in Athens, VT this past week. Verdant is run by Pete Weiss, for years the co-owner of Zippah Studio in Boston (along with my old EU Wurlitzer buddy, Brian Charles), a cozy rural VT studio chock full of nice gear that subscribes to the ‘all in one room’ recording ethos practiced by producers such as Daniel Lanois. It was great to finally meet up and work together.

Since we had neglected to head into the studio after our recent summer tour and the planned autumn Prehistoric Horse tour disintegrated at the last minute, I was determined to make something musical of this trip out east and booked a session. We bombed up there from NYC in the morning, set up and recorded a few hours of our crazy free improvisational music live (without headphones, thank you), hung out by the cozy wood fired stove, crashed out and bombed back to NYC for a gig in Brooklyn the next night. Of course, it being the peak of Autumn, Vermont was much more than just verdant, but a kaleidoscope of color…the drive was gorgeous and we paid a visit to the fine Haymarket Cafe in Northhampton, MA both to and fro.

It was really great to create music without overdubbing and without messing around much with the technology…just set up and play. I’ve yet to unpack the files and have a serious listen, but the late night playback hinted at some good stuff. This trio needs to release a CD!
