The recent Sonic Demons Pt I group improvisation set at the Ivy Room was to be a showcase of one of my works which, although based on improvised performances, is an intentional and sculpted work. The ensuing result was still good, due to the talents of the fine improvisers on the gig (Wayne Grim, John Hanes, Suki O’Kane, Jeff Hobbs), but it was not intentional.

So, I vowed to perform the Sonic Demons Pt II set w/ Suki OKane with said nod to intention. I decided to go with Suki’s idea of limiting our gear to only one trip up the long flight of stairs that leads up to The Luggage Store Gallery, just two doors from the grungy corner that is 6th and Market streets in San Francisco. This meant forgoing a guitar amp plugging straight into the PA.
After an inspiring set by Noah Phillips and Jason Hoopes on guitar and contrabass, which knocked on some of the same doors we might have during a completely improvised set, I made the decision to detune my vintage telecaster to a unison A tuning and open the set with a version of Lucifer’s Meltdown from Sonic Demons – a looping piece that has not received much performance or practice in the past year. It worked very well, setting the stage for a very good soundscape set. Suki, a lovely person and musician with a deliciously playful aesthetic, found all the right places to contribute and we managed to communicate and create in both a thoughtful and fun way for thirty minutes or so, reflecting the flow and dynamic of Sonic Demons.
